Our choice of words plays a crucial role in how we communicate with each other, how we think, and how we see and understand the world. To begin with, only when we have a word/a name for “something” can we think and communicate about it. At the same time, the concept of what and how we feel about our surroundings is embedded in our culture and designed by humans. It is neither natural nor “God-given”. Language and the use of words are under a constant shift, always reflecting the Zeitgeist (a German term that means the ghost of time).

The exhibition is an invitation to think about one's language while receiving a glimpse into foreign languages. This shall be a seed of thoughts to reflect one own language more with care and think about the hidden concept behind it. The exhibits were created over a longer period and display the different geographic stations but also topics of interest.

The latest work, which is being shown for the first time in this exhibition, was created in collaboration with Ritsuko Tsutsumi. Ritsuko Tsutsumi is a Japanese writer and is continually in dialogue with Mariko Takagi.

All typography–based exhibits connect and compare two to four languages (German, Japanese, English, and Chinese). This method allows the visitor to discover different concepts of language, the inscription of culture in language, and how this affects our thoughts and wor(l)dview.
