The "Generational Craftsmanship: The Historical Art of Xiaoxitian Deity Statue Carving" exhibition explores the 170-year legacy of the Xiaoxitian deity statue carving workshop in Lukang, Taiwan, established by Wu Tian. Highlighting its unique role in Lukang's deity statue carving tradition and the intricate Quanzhou-style decoration craftsmanship, the exhibition is organized into three main sections: History, Craftsmanship, and Works.
The History Section illustrates the workshop's journey from its inception to the present day, featuring vintage photographs and depictions of the working environment from the fourth to fifth generations. This area underscores the workshop’s deep roots and enduring traditions. The Craftsmanship Section provides an in-depth look at the statue carving process, with special emphasis on the complex techniques of the Quanzhou school. The Works Section showcases a selection of pieces by the fourth to sixth-generation artisans, with particular focus on the contributions of the sixth-generation heir, Wu Xiangyu, emphasizing their remarkable artistic achievements.
Through physical exhibits, multimedia presentations, and interactive displays, the exhibition invites visitors to step into the world of Quanzhou-style deity decoration, where traditional craftsmanship coexists with modern innovation. It celebrates the cultural and artistic significance of Xiaoxitian's legacy while inspiring respect for the preservation of traditional crafts.
